This is a really sassy, informative and inspiring book! I have been doing little jobs on *nix workstations for years and am a novice awk and vi user. Some commands I never got my brain around properly and there comes a point, where you're too ashamed to ask your colleagues.This book takes me where I never believed I would get. It won't improve my awk talents, but sed, find, a bit of shell scripting and just simply loads and loads of fun with this really extremely readable book.I also have the "Teach your mom Ubuntu" (or similar) which I can also recommend. No-Starch-Press have really fulfilled my expectations and more with these two books.Buy this book at this price, you cannot make a mistake, especially if you just want that additional nudge to get further than ever before on the *nix command line.Have fun!
Solche schwierige Sachen so einfach erklären, heisst Meisterung der Art Lehrer/Lehrerin !Habe schon viele interessante Tips erfahren und das Buch ist sehr logisch gebildet.Viele Beispiele sind praktisch und logisch gebildet.Ich werde noch Bücher dieses Autors dabeikaufen und denke dass ich noch das andere Buch in die gleiche Serie kaufen wird,das andere Buch heisst "The Way Linux works" oder so etwas.Auch sehr toll sind die Erklärungen der Geschichte von Terminals und warum mann etwas so oder so macht.Mann kann besser die Struktur von aktuelle Computersysteme begreifen (Vergleich zwischen alte 'Commands' versus moderne 'Commands'und warum die immer noch funktionieren im Gegenteil von Microsoft Dos Terminal). Ob wie mann das in Flämisch sagt: "een aanrader" !!
Everything is perfect, just like I expected. I as someone who has no prior experience with Linux command line have gained a decent amount of information after reading the first 70 pages. I think after finishing the book I will be able to give it a try and run my laptop without the help of the mouse-cursor "Just for fun"
As an entry-level user of linux for the operation of design and simulation software in my working place, I was missing a structured explanation for all the 'ad hoc' tricks and tips that my colleagues gave me when asked. After several 'googling' sessions I found the free available pdf-text of William E. Shotts and it was just the type of text I needed: showing the basic mechanisms and commands by elegant, to-the-point examples. In the last part Shotts explains how you can use all these commands in scripts for automated operation, which keeps the text attractive if I become more advanced. Of course no text is perfect but it convinced me to have in print on my desk.
Eines der besten Bücher zu dem Thema, die ich gefunden habe. Leider auf Englisch, aber verständlich geschrieben ... die Beispiele sind ebenfalls sehr gut und alles ist gut nachvollziehbar. Eine Prise Humor lockert das Ganze ungemein auf und macht Spass beim Lesen.
Learning the linux commands has a steep learning curve but it is very rewarding. For those who want to know the terminal, this is, without doubt, THE BOOK about this subject, in my humble opinion. I wish I had read it earlier on.
Da ich in meinem Studium und auch in meinen künftigem Berufsfeld nicht an Linux vorbeikomme, habe ich mir dieses Buch besorgt, in der Hoffnung, mich mehr mit der Linux-Kommandozeile anfreunden zu können.Zugegeben, aller Anfang ist schwer. Dieses Buch ist für mich gerade aber deswegen eine Empfehlung wert, weil auf einen allzu steilen Einstieg verzichtet wird. Trotz der englishen Sprache des Buches, kann man den Inhalt relativ einfach verstehen. Die verwendeten Wörter sind nicht allzu schwierig und auch die verwendeten Beispiele, an denen gewisse Kommandos erklärt werden sollen sind so gehalten, dass sie leicht nachvollziehbar sind. Das Buch deckt jeden Bereich ab, der für die alltägliche Kommandozeilennutzung wichtig sind. Das Navigieren in Verzeichnissen wird genauso behandelt wie das Suchen von Dateien und auch der Umgang mit Prozessen wird erklärt. Kann das Buch guten Gewissens für Informatik-Stundenten weiterempfehlen.
Das Buch gefällt mir sehr gut, vor allem, weil man es auf linuxcommanddotorg/tlcl.php auch kostenlos bekommt und nicht hier auf Amazon kaufen muss...
